Rebecca Recognized at Arches Student Print Exhibition

Rebecca submitted art work from her first and only art course at Mt. Holyoke for consideration for inclusion at the Arches Student Print Exhibition at the Damfort Museum of Art in Framingham. Not only did they accept one of her pieces for the exhibit that opened today, it was one of the few selected from the 227 pieces submitted by students at 20 colleges (including several prestigious art schools) to receive Juror’s Commendation! Her piece is one of only 5 featured on the exhibition’s web site. Go Rebecca! Click here for photos.

Kayla jumps to 17th in Massachusetts State Open Finals

Kayla delivered her 2nd best indoor high school long jump (15’11.25″) to improve 10 slots from her 27th seed to place 17th in today’s Massachusetts State Open Championships. This meet brought together all the top jumpers from across the state. As expected based on seeds coming in, Newton North was runner up in the team competition behind Mansfield 38-29 (results, photos, MileSplit Story, Boston Herald, Boston Globe, Newton track blog, Newton Patch article, milesplit photos, newton tab photos).

KP Qualifies for All State Championship Meet!

With the four divisional championships concluded over the weekend, the Massachusetts Indoor Track State Open Championship qualifiers have just been named. In just her 2nd season of indoor long jumping, Kayla achieved her goal of advancing to this meet. Kayla’s Division 1 championship PR of 16’1″ on Friday night earned her a 4-way tie for the 12th place wildcard slot and 24th overall. Eight Newton athletes qualified in individual events. The meet is Saturday 11am at the Reggie Lewis Center. The boys jump first, so the girls long jump will likely go off around noon or so.

Mansfield looks favored to win, but never count North out, as it will come down to a few points. Andover and Lincoln-Sudbury will be right in the hunt as well.

North wins D1 State Championships, Kayla jumps to 16’1″ PR

North defeated Andover 55-48 to win the division 1 state championships Friday night (photos, jump photos, blog preview, milesplit preview, results, Newton Tab article, globe article, herald article, track blog, Newton Tab Photos, ESPN article). Kayla lead off with a first jump 16’1″ high school PR in the regulation Reggie Lewis pit. She jumped nearly a foot farther than her 2010 D1 meet. She came into the meet seeded 13th and ended up tied for 9th (bumped to 11th based on 2nd jump tiebreaker). Outside of seniors, Kayla ranked 4th. Factoring in the D2, D3, and D4 championship meets, Kayla tied for the 24th best jump in all state championship competitions. Technically this should advance her to the open but will need to see how rules play out (link). She ends the season with the 36th best jump of the year state wide out of 622 competitors. She ranked 63th last year. She jumped 15’10” or better in the last 4 of 5 meets.

Kayla jumps to 16’3″ PR in Needham Youth Classic

In a tune up for Friday’s Division 1 State Championship meet, Kayla joined some teammates to compete for the Waltham Track Club at the Needham Youth Classic (photos). She jumped 16’3″ for a personal best and 2nd place behind Carla Forbes. She also placed 4th in the 55m hurdles (10.37) and 5th in the 55m dash (8.02). Per the meet program she broke the meet long jump record (along with Carla) from 2008, but there is one 16’9″ jump listed for the meet back in 2005 it overlooks so she settles for #3 on the all-time list :-).

Kayla jumps to 10th and 15’11 1/4″ PR in McIntyre Elite Meet

Kayla hit a PR 15′ 11.25″ PR to take 10th in the McIntyre elite track meet at Reggie Lewis on Sunday competing against the top jumpers in the state (results, news article, track blog). She came into the trials meet last week seeded 31st and placed 18th to qualify for this week. Newton placed 1st, 5th, 7th, and 10th and has qualified 5 jumpers for the D1 state meet. She is currently ranked 33rd in the state.

Now this is what you call hitting your mark!
