Newton North 4x55m Shuttle Hurdle Relay breaks New England Record with 10th place finish in New Balance Nationals
Kayla & Co. traveled to the Big Apple last weekend to compete in the New Balance Indoor National Championship at The Armory (results, photos, Newton Tab article, Newton Patch article, Newton High School Paper pre-meet article, milesplit coverage). The girls improved on their 12th place seed with a 10th place 34.00, breaking the New England Record for the event of 34.20 set by North last year.
Kayla concludes her indoor high school career with 4 school relay records (4x50m hurdles, 4x55m hurdles, 4x50m dash, and 3xLJ). Only Carla Forbes and Kayla Wong have more North indoor records to their name than Kayla.
North’s time fell just short of the top-6 finish required to earn All-American honors in a very competitive field, but what a thrill to be in the hunt. If they had competed with their 34.00 time last year they would have been 5th and earned the honor.
Here is the New Balance video of their heat. The girls compete in blue uniforms as Waltham TC due to mass state season limit rules. Kayla is the 3rd leg and visible for last 10 yards:
There is also a NewtonSportsPhotography video of New England highlights that includes Dad’s shots of the girls:
Kayla stayed on overnight to support teammate Carla Forbes who set a new meet record winning the triple jump with a USA #1 42′ 5.25″ jump so good that that it was only 0.25″ off the all-time high school record for a junior and which would have placed 8th in the Division 1 NCAA championships held the same weekend. See the NewtonSportsPhotography.Com slideshow of her jumps. She crushed the field by over a foot. I connected her with my buddy newscaster Nicole Hayes at ESPN for an interview.
Gram and Gampy were a huge help, making the journey to Newton to watch over Jared and the animals. Nanny and Papa made the trip down to the Armory to catch the race.
Outdoor track season (schedule) starts on Thursday March 29th with a dual meet at Natick.
The girls head out on the town on Friday night:
