Jared splits a 23.8 on Newton North 5th place 4x200m at State Coaches Elite Meet

Jared split a personal best 23.8 third leg in the 4x200m as North took 5th in the MSTCA Elite Meet on Sunday (results, video). This is a dress rehersal for state open. His team was missing its 2nd strongest runner costing them 2-3 seconds on the anchor leg.

Video of race:

On Thursday, he ran a personal best 7.10 in the 55m to place 3rd against Braintree (results). Overall in the Bay State league he ranks as the 2nd fastest freshman. In the long jump, he continues to rank as #2 freshman in New England out of 396 jumpers.

Jared adds 4 points to Newton North win over Needham

Jared ran to a 55m PR 7.11 for 2nd place and long jumped 18′ 11.25″ for 3rd place, scoring 4 of Newton’s 60 points in is 60-34 win over Needham (results). He finished ahead of all Needham athletes in his events and only 2 athletes from the remaining 10 bay state conference teams competing out jumped him.

Jared picks up D1 State Relay Championship Gold in Sprint Medley Relay

Jared sat out the long jump due to hip flexor tendonitis, but helped power Newton North to victory in the 1600m Sprint Medley Relay (800m,200m, 200m, 400m) at the 2013 D1 MSTCA D1 State Relays yesterday at the Reggie Lewis Center (results, video, photos, milesplit article, Newton Tab article, globe article, herald article). Jared split a 23.9 200m on the third leg, holding off a surging Lincoln-Sudbury team, as part of their 3:37.07 overall time, which ranks 6th of 995 performances nationally. At the end of last season it would have ranked 28th of 1800. This may enable them to enter the National meet in NY as last year North placed 14th with a slower time and only had a 3:40 performance in the 2012 D1 meet implying that the organizers allow a relay time to be estimated based on individual performances of the team members. Three of the 4 relay members return next year.

Jared ran only 1/8th of the total race distance (the 800m runner really determines much of the outcome), but his coach characterized him as “saving the race” by having a very fast relay handoff to start his race, and forcing the faster Lincoln-Sudbury runner to stay in lane 2 the entire race and not allowing him to pass him. If Jared had conceded the poll, he’d likely have run 0.5-1s slower and the North anchor runner would have begun with not only the time deficit but the need to run wide as well.

The Newton North boys tied for 2nd place overall with 28 points, with Jared’s relay contributing 10 of those points.

On the girls side, the results now include Kayla’s name for posterity for the 3 meet records she set in this meet last year (LJ, 50m, 50m hurdle relays). All three survived and will likely be around for awhile with Carla graduating. Kayla picked up 9 state relay golds and 4 meet records over the course of her indoor and outdoor career. Jared is off to a pretty good start helping North teams to 2 state meet titles (this and team pentathlon) in his first 4 high school track meets.

Jared jumps to 11th in Boston Holiday Challenge

Jared increased his indoor PR by a half a foot with a 19’2″ 11th place jump at the Boston Holiday Challenge at the Reggie Lewis Center today(results, photo gallery). He was one of only 2 freshman to place in top 12 in meet (and one of only 6 underclassmen). The meet had high qualifying standards and teams traveling from NY and NH.

His jump moves him to 54th overall in Mass and 8th in the Bay State League. Among freshman it ranks him 1st in New England (by almost a foot) and #8 in the USA.

North wins MSTCA Team Pentathlon

Jared helped Newton North defend its Team Pentathlon crown, jumping an indoor PR 18’7.25″ for 2nd place among the jumpers and yielding the #1 freshman jump in New England thus far this year (and USA #16 of 534). Each school fields a team of 5 athletes who each take a pentathlon event and the performances are scored per the pentathlon tables rather than by placings. Newton scored a total of 3517 points (results, photos, jump sequences)

Jared opens high school track career with 2nd place 55m dash finish versus Brookline

Jared opened his high school track career with a personal best 7.14a in the 55m dash vs. Brookline, placing 2nd and scoring 3 points toward Newton’s win (photos) The performance ranks him 5th/266 among Massachusett high school freshman thus far this year and ranks him 13th in the Bay State League. He also won the JV 200m dash held at the end of the meet with a PR 24.4.

Jared takes 3 Events at Bay State Games — Breaks Meet Record

Jared wrapped up his 2012 Outdoor track season by winning the long jump, triple jump, and 100m in the age 10-14 Junior Division of the 2012 Bay State Games (photos, results, Newton Sports Photography coverage, Waltham paper).

He was the only athlete to win 3 events in any division. His long jump mark of 18′ 9.5″ broke the 18′ 7.25″ meet record for the event set in 2005.

The junior division of the meet dates back to at least 1999, while the games themselves date back to 1984 and represent competitors from across Massachusetts. Due to the “limited” number of competitors who showed up to face him, Jared completed his 4 long jumps in the span of 5 minutes.

He won the 100m by a margin of 0.40 (12.08 final, 12.03 in trials) — see photo sequence.

He ends his outdoor season undefeated against 14yo/8th graders in all of his events (except 100m loss to Arthur Baygboe in NE JO) and with 3 state meet records to his credit (this record along with Middle school state meet LJ and 4×1 relay).

Jared jumps to 5th in LJ and TJ at USATF Region 1 Junior Olympics

Jared improved on his seeding in both the long jump and triple jump with 5th place medal-stand finishes in the USATF Region 1 Junior Olympics held on Long Island on Sunday (photos, results, Waltham paper). This meet included the top athletes from New York and New England. Likely the youngest athlete in the competition, Jared was the #1 15yo in the long jump and #2 in the triple jump (in his 4th triple jump competition).

These finishes gave him the option to advance to the National Junior Olympic Championships in Baltimore later in the month with the top 5 finishers from each of the 16 regions around the country qualifing to advance.

Jared jumps to 6th at USATF Youth Nationals

Jared and Dad used some Delta frequent flyer miles to fly down to the 103F heat of Arlington, Texas for the 2012 USATF Youth Nationals. Jared jumped 19’2″ on hist first attempt to place 6th in the 16-competitor field (results, jump sequences). He led the 8AM competition after the 1st round and was 3rd going into the 6th round. Only 1 jumper had a better 2nd-best jump than his 19′ 3/4″ 2nd jump.

He was the youngest competitor in the field of mainly of 16yo sophomores. The intermediate boys division consists of those born 1996-1997, so his October 1997 birthday put him on the younger end of the bracket.

The meet doesn’t draw as much depth as the junior olympic Nationals in late July, but Texas is a track hotbed, so the local talent made the meet competitive. The jumpers he beat included three with PRs of 20’8, 20’4, and 19’8″.

Jared improved over 3 feet from his 16′ jump at this meet 1 year ago, where he placed 11th against 13-14yos.

Jared also qualified for the triple jump by jumping 38’6″ in his first ever competition 10 days before. He jumped 36’3″ on Friday morning to place 8th in his 3rd ever competition (results, jump sequences).

We stayed North of the complex and had views of the Dallas Coyboys and Texas Rangers stadiums from our balcony.

Jared was the first athlete to arrive at the venue at 6:30am. His warm up gave him an edge:

Massachusetts State Middle School Championships

The 2nd annual Massachusetts Middle School Championships were held Saturday June 9th at the University of Massachusett Lowell, bringing together the top middle school track programs from across the state (results, Newton Sports Photography coverage, family photos). There was a two-event per athlete and 3 entry/team/event limits, so Jared did the Long Jump and the 4x100m relay letting his teammates run the 100m.

A field of 48 athletes completed in the long jump with Jared winning the event and breaking the meet record by over 2 feet with 19′ 2″ jump. Jared bested 2nd place by 5.5″ and 3rd by a foot (see jump sequences). This was Jared’s 3rd best outing (after the 20’4.25″ at all-city meet and a 19’6″ at a Waltham TC practice meet), yet it still ranks 31st nationally among 14,000 middle school jumpers.

Jared land a 19’2″ jump on his third attempt.

Here is a video sequence of Jared’s jumps. His best jumps were his 3rd (19’2″) and 5th (19’0″):

In the 4x100m, the first three runners split 13.74, 12.31, and 12.39. Jared brought home the baton in a blazing 10.82, for his 2nd state championship and meet record of the day (49.26), besting runner up Jonas Clarke MS of Lexington by 1.25 seconds. Usain Bolt anchors in 8.71, so he still has some work to do :-). The open 100m was won in 12.50, so without an entry limit Jared would likely have won that event as well (11.84c personal best).

Jared was one of only 3 athletes (and only boy) at the meet to win 2 events.
