Knights Battle Bulldogs

The MPS U13 Knights fell 0-7 to their sister team, the MPS U13 Bulldogs at Citizens Bank Field in Lancaster this evening.

The Knights have drawn a difficult early season schedule with their first two games coming against the Bulldogs, who are leading the New England Super-Y division with a 5-0 record, and the Ottawa Fury, who now stand at 4-0. They travel to New York on Saturday to face the 0-1-2 Black Watch team, who also drew Ottawa and the Bulldogs early for their two losses.

The Knights only spent aboout 5 minutes on offense when Jared was playing, so the highlight reel is limited. Jared had a few good charges including a shot on goal and drawing a corner kick and an direct kick for the team.

Kayla enters the Work Force

Last week Kayla interviewed and tested for a job in the Aquatics department at the YMCA and also for a life guard position with Newton Park and Rec. She got offers for both!

She is going to take the YMCA job and teach a small swim class, life guard, and help coach the Blue Waves (her original swim team). Her hard work getting getting certified in CPR/first Aid and Life guarding during her time at camp last year paid off. She also got three very good references which the Y checked the day after she applied. Go Kayla!

Division 1 State Track Championships

Kayla qualified competed in 2 events in the Eastern Division 1 State Championship meet held in Dilboy Stadium in Somerville today. She logged her 2nd best all-time efforts in both the Long Jump (15′ 11 3/4″) and in the 100m hurdles (17.51) for 13th and 18th place respectively. Among freshmen and sophomores, she ranked 6th and 8th in those events.

Newton North finished a somewhat disappointing 3rd overall with 54.5 pts in the meet behind Andover (78.5 pts) and Newton South (62pts) (results, Newton Tab article, Globe article, Herald article). In retrospect Andover’s 78.5 points would have been tough to beat even if all things had gone Newton’s way. See the Newton Track Blog for more coverage.

Newton piled up 48 of their points with four strong individual wins (PV, LJ, TJ, 4×400) and a 2nd (800m) that should bode well for their outlook in the State Open next week. The 4x100m relay placed 5th today with a 50.59 running with a different alternate and qualified for the open. The current plan is to skip the 4×1 in favor of fully loading the 4×4 team with Carla Forbes.
Here are links to the results of other divisional meets: Div2, Div 4, Div3, Central Mass, and Western Mass.

From 2010-05

Looking back, Kayla has had an exciting sophomore indoor/outdoor track season breaking two Newton North school relay records (indoor 3xLJ, indoor 4x50m), earning two Division 1 state relay titles (indoor 3xLJ, outdoor 4x100m hurdles) and running a state-leading time for frosh/soph level 4x100m relay. She contributed to 26 of the 101 points the team needed to win the indoor and outdoor state relay meets. The team was undefeated indoors and outdoors in dual meets and won all its state-wide competitions until this meet. On Thursday night she picked up her 3rd varsity letter for the year and the 4th of her high school career.

Kayla Hurdles to 17.38 PR in Bay State Conference Meet

Kayla lowered her 100m Hurdle PR by 0.16 to an auto-timed 17.38 in a very cold and drizzly 12-team Bay State league all-star meet in Weymouth today for 11th place (results, Newton Tab Article). She also placed 11th in the Long Jump.
