Jared set a new 22.4 200m personal best taking 2nd in the 200m as Newton North defeated Weymouth 101 – 35 to conclude a 7-0 undefeated season (results, photos). He defeated a 49.6 400m runner from Weymouth, who was responsible for the dramatic Weymouth 4×4 win that tied this meet last year. The 22.4 ranks him 29th in the country among freshman on athletic.net and 71 of 22,000 on milesplit.com. In Massachusetts, it ties him for 3rd in the Bay State league rankings (behind teammate Ryan and UConn bound PJ Hayes from Walpole) and gives him a top 10 ranking overall on athletic.net (state database is not complete).
He also took 2nd in the long jump to his teammate Dave (20’6″) and anchored the 4x100m to a come from behind photo-finish win.
Jared was 3rd highest dual meet point scorer on the North team and (I think) 4th highest scorer in the league, contributing 59 individual points and 35 points via the 7 wins of the undefeated 4x100m relay (67.5 total if you allocate 1.25/relay).

Jared had his first outdoor track meet as a Newton North Tiger on Thursday last week (photos, results).
Jared and Kayla set high goals for themselves and I can count on 1 hand how many times they have come away from a meet satisfied with their performances. This was one of those meets.
He next anchored the North 4x100m team to 1st with a 10.9 split in a league-leading 46.5:
He next won the 200m over a field of 19 runners in a personal best 23.0, upsetting Lucas Holt, the fastest freshman indoors at 55m and 2nd fastest at 300m. This mark currently ranks him tied for #1 in the Bay State Conference and qualifies him for the D1 state championships in the event (see photo sequence).
He also took 2nd in the triple jump with a 37’3″ jump (jump sequence), scoring a team-leading total of 18 of Newton North’s 105 points in their 105-35 point win over Natick.
Jared combined with Ryan Lucken, Ben Porter, and Dan Swain to run a season’s best 1:32.46 in the 4x200m relay, the 5th fastest time in Massachusetts and 11th in New England this year and a milesplit elite-level performance (results). The team placed 10th in the emerging elite division and ranks 104th (out of 10,000 teams) in the US.
Team splits: Ryan 22.66, Ben 23.07, Jared 23.37, Dan 23.29
Ryan’s lead off leg was impressive with the flat start. The equivalent of roughly 22.0 for a running start leg.
Here is the professional New Balance / Armory video of the race:
Here is mom’s version:
In the Freshman 60m dash, Jared improved on his 32nd seed to place 22nd (7.65, 7.099 55m split), but with over 3 weeks since his last 55m race, didn’t get the start he was looking for. The starter was a bit erratic (as commentators mention), but that’s something to adapt to when racing outside of Reggie. Results
Mom’s version:
Jared also served as alternate for the Newton North Sprint Medley. He ran on the MA #1 team that qualified the North to compete in the national meet. The team raced to an All-American 6th place.
Jared was one of the few (I counted 3) freshman boys competing in the State Open meet on Saturday at the Reggie Lewis Center (results and Milesplit coverage). Â His 4x200m relay team improved on their 13th place seed with an 11th place 1:33.87. Â Here is a video of the race. Â I had trouble getting into position and focusing initially, but got it sorted out for his 2nd leg. They were seeded in a slower heat than last week so had to push themselves.
Here is a video from a different photographer — Jared’s race starts at 4:00. Chick here to jump ahead.
Here is my video.
Newton North Splits
Porter 23.57
Prior 23.47
Swain 23.40
King 23.43
Jared split a personal best 23.12 on the 2nd leg in Newton North’s 4x200m relay in the MIAA Division 1 State Championships on Saturday (race video, photo galleries, results, coverage). Newton ended up 2nd in the team competition with 48 points behind Lowell’s 50.
The relay qualified to advance to next week’s State Open competition as 13th seed in the field of 24 teams. Jared is the only freshman running in the top 13 relays (I didn’t check the rest) and no freshman qualified in individual events, so he is one of the few if not only freshman boys in the meet. The relay’s splits were 23.78 lead off, 23.12 Jared, 23.10, and 24.25 for a time of 1:34.25. Had North loaded their top sprinter into this relay they likely would have placed 2nd.
RACE VIDEO (Jared 2nd Leg). The Chelmsford senior who Jared holds off was a member of the meet record team and New England Champion relay last year (5th at Nationals), so no slouch. He is #11 returning 200m runner in the state with a 22.67 PR. Thanks to good handoffs, North comes into Jared’s leg a yard ahead of them and comes off the 2nd hand-off with a yard lead.
Jared set personal bests in the 55m dash (6.99, 6th), long jump (19’5.5″, 5th) and 4x200m (23.68, 4th) at the Bay State Conference Championships (results, photo gallery, Newton Tab article). Team scores were not kept as the focus is on individual championships, but if the meet were scored, it would have been North winning with 125 points with 2nd place Needham back at 57.75pts. Jared contributed 12 of North’s 125 points. He was one of only 5 athletes in the league to place in 2 individual events. Only 4 seniors beat him in the long jump. He missed qualifying for the state championships in the long jump by 0.5″.
Jared improved his indoor long jump PR to 19′ 4.25″ and his 55m dash to 7.08 in Newton North’s final dual meet vs Hergert division champion Milton (results). His long jump was the 2nd longest of his career and moves him to #17 freshman nationally (of 1475). He continues to rank #2 (of 405) in New England. He placed 3rd in the dual meet and 6th out of 34 Bay State conference athletes competing this evening. His #8 league ranking auto-qualifies him for the Bay State conference championships next week.
In the 55m dash Jared improved his PR to 7.08 with a 4th place finish. He placed 14th overall of the 122 athletes competing. He ranks as #2 freshman in league and #8 in the state.
Jared split a personal best 23.8 third leg in the 4x200m as North took 5th in the MSTCA Elite Meet on Sunday (results, video). This is a dress rehersal for state open. His team was missing its 2nd strongest runner costing them 2-3 seconds on the anchor leg.
Jared ran to a 55m PR 7.11 for 2nd place and long jumped 18′ 11.25″ for 3rd place, scoring 4 of Newton’s 60 points in is 60-34 win over Needham (results). He finished ahead of all Needham athletes in his events and only 2 athletes from the remaining 10 bay state conference teams competing out jumped him.
Jared sat out the long jump due to hip flexor tendonitis, but helped power Newton North to victory in the 1600m Sprint Medley Relay (800m,200m, 200m, 400m) at the 2013 D1 MSTCA D1 State Relays yesterday at the Reggie Lewis Center (results, video, photos, milesplit article, Newton Tab article, globe article, herald article). Jared split a 23.9 200m on the third leg, holding off a surging Lincoln-Sudbury team, as part of their 3:37.07 overall time, which ranks 6th of 995 performances nationally. At the end of last season it would have ranked 28th of 1800. This may enable them to enter the National meet in NY as last year North placed 14th with a slower time and only had a 3:40 performance in the 2012 D1 meet implying that the organizers allow a relay time to be estimated based on individual performances of the team members. Three of the 4 relay members return next year.
Jared ran only 1/8th of the total race distance (the 800m runner really determines much of the outcome), but his coach characterized him as “saving the race” by having a very fast relay handoff to start his race, and forcing the faster Lincoln-Sudbury runner to stay in lane 2 the entire race and not allowing him to pass him. If Jared had conceded the poll, he’d likely have run 0.5-1s slower and the North anchor runner would have begun with not only the time deficit but the need to run wide as well.
The Newton North boys tied for 2nd place overall with 28 points, with Jared’s relay contributing 10 of those points.
On the girls side, the results now include Kayla’s name for posterity for the 3 meet records she set in this meet last year (LJ, 50m, 50m hurdle relays). All three survived and will likely be around for awhile with Carla graduating. Kayla picked up 9 state relay golds and 4 meet records over the course of her indoor and outdoor career. Jared is off to a pretty good start helping North teams to 2 state meet titles (this and team pentathlon) in his first 4 high school track meets.
Here is a video I found on youtube that someone took of the race:
