Jared helps North to 11th place in State Open 4x200m Relay

Jared was one of the few (I counted 3) freshman boys competing in the State Open meet on Saturday at the Reggie Lewis Center (results and Milesplit coverage).   His 4x200m relay team improved on their 13th place seed with an 11th place 1:33.87.  Here is a video of the race.  I had trouble getting into position and focusing initially, but got it sorted out for his 2nd leg. They were seeded in a slower heat than last week so had to push themselves.

Here is a video from a different photographer — Jared’s race starts at 4:00. Chick here to jump ahead.

Here is my video.

Kayla jumps to 4th in New York State Track Conference Championships

Kayla jumped to a 4th place in the long jump on Day 1 of the 2013 New York State Track Conference Championships Friday night in Ithaca (press release, results, meet program, meet website). Kayla jumped 5.25m (17′ 2.75″), her 2nd best indoor performance, improving on her 5th place seed to add 5 points to Ithaca’s 74 point 1st day total. Ithaca led the 12 school meet followed by St. Lawrence (57 points) and Rochester (28 points) going into Day 2. Kayla placed 12th in the triple jump with a jump of 10.25m (33’7.5″), well off her 36′ PR, but still her 3rd best career performance. Ithaca won the meet by 52 points (2nd day press release).

Newton North 4x200m runs to 8th place in MIAA Division 1 State Meet

Jared split a personal best 23.12 on the 2nd leg in Newton North’s 4x200m relay in the MIAA Division 1 State Championships on Saturday (race video, photo galleries, results, coverage). Newton ended up 2nd in the team competition with 48 points behind Lowell’s 50.

The relay qualified to advance to next week’s State Open competition as 13th seed in the field of 24 teams. Jared is the only freshman running in the top 13 relays (I didn’t check the rest) and no freshman qualified in individual events, so he is one of the few if not only freshman boys in the meet. The relay’s splits were 23.78 lead off, 23.12 Jared, 23.10, and 24.25 for a time of 1:34.25. Had North loaded their top sprinter into this relay they likely would have placed 2nd.

RACE VIDEO (Jared 2nd Leg). The Chelmsford senior who Jared holds off was a member of the meet record team and New England Champion relay last year (5th at Nationals), so no slouch. He is #11 returning 200m runner in the state with a 22.67 PR. Thanks to good handoffs, North comes into Jared’s leg a yard ahead of them and comes off the 2nd hand-off with a yard lead.

Kayla jumps to indoor PR 17′ 5″ for 6th at NYU FastTrack Challenge

Kayla travelled to New York City for a Friday meet at the Armory, the day before the Milrose Games (photo galleries, results, news story).

Kayla hit a new indoor personal best of 17′ 5″ (5.31m) to place 6th in the competition. She now ranks 20th in the ECAC in both the long jump and the triple jump and #1 on the Ithaca College long jump depth chart.

Jared places in 3 events in Bay State Conference Championships

Jared set personal bests in the 55m dash (6.99, 6th), long jump (19’5.5″, 5th) and 4x200m (23.68, 4th) at the Bay State Conference Championships (results, photo gallery, Newton Tab article). Team scores were not kept as the focus is on individual championships, but if the meet were scored, it would have been North winning with 125 points with 2nd place Needham back at 57.75pts. Jared contributed 12 of North’s 125 points. He was one of only 5 athletes in the league to place in 2 individual events. Only 4 seniors beat him in the long jump. He missed qualifying for the state championships in the long jump by 0.5″.

As a freshman he ranks #2 of 485 in NE and 28th in the country in the long jump and 87th of 4620 in the 55m dash.

In the NVL Championships, he would have gotten roughly the same places.

Kayla returns to hurdling with a 60m PR 9.97 at Ithaca Invitational

Kayla returned to hurdling with a 9.97 60m hurdles PR at the Ithaca Invitational for 11th (results, 200m video). By standardized conversions, that works out to a 9.27 55m hurdles, which improves on her 9.32 high school PR. She also ran a personal best 27.5 split on a 4x200m relay.
Her photo (below) was featured on the full back page of The Ithacan college newspaper. Her coach set copies of the paper to us and her high school coach. Click on image for larger view.

Mom flew up to attend and took a video of the 4x200m. Kayla is the 2nd leg:

Kayla had foul trouble in long jump, but her last jump (shown below) was measured at a monster 5.75m (18′ 10.25″):

Jared improves PRs in long jump and 55m dash vs. Milton

Jared improved his indoor long jump PR to 19′ 4.25″ and his 55m dash to 7.08 in Newton North’s final dual meet vs Hergert division champion Milton (results). His long jump was the 2nd longest of his career and moves him to #17 freshman nationally (of 1475). He continues to rank #2 (of 405) in New England. He placed 3rd in the dual meet and 6th out of 34 Bay State conference athletes competing this evening. His #8 league ranking auto-qualifies him for the Bay State conference championships next week.

In the 55m dash Jared improved his PR to 7.08 with a 4th place finish. He placed 14th overall of the 122 athletes competing. He ranks as #2 freshman in league and #8 in the state.

Jared splits a 23.8 on Newton North 5th place 4x200m at State Coaches Elite Meet

Jared split a personal best 23.8 third leg in the 4x200m as North took 5th in the MSTCA Elite Meet on Sunday (results, video). This is a dress rehersal for state open. His team was missing its 2nd strongest runner costing them 2-3 seconds on the anchor leg.

Video of race:

On Thursday, he ran a personal best 7.10 in the 55m to place 3rd against Braintree (results). Overall in the Bay State league he ranks as the 2nd fastest freshman. In the long jump, he continues to rank as #2 freshman in New England out of 396 jumpers.

Kayla sets new personal best in triple jump and adds 2nd ECAC event qualifier

Kayla jumped to a huge personal best in the triple jump at the Empire 8 championship on Saturday, jumping 36’0.25″ to place 5th (results). Her previous PR was 34’6″ and her high school PR was 33’5.5″.

The mark qualifiers her in a 2nd event at the ECAC championships and moves her to 2nd on the Ithaca College depth chart in the triple jump. She also ran a personal best 8.38 in the 55 meter dash. The triple jump is at 4pm on Friday March 1st while the long jump is at 1:30pm on Saturday March 2nd (schedule).

Kayla qualifies for ECAC Championships with Indoor PR 17′ 2 1/4″ long jump at Cornell Upstate Challenge

Kayla jumped to an indoor personal best 17′ 2 1/4″ to place 6th at the Cornell Indoor Challenge in Ithaca on Saturday (Ithaca College News Article, results). You wouldn’t guess it from the Ithaca news release, but Kayla was one of only 3 Ithaca athletes to score points in the meet (scored 6 places deep).

The jump qualifies her for the ECAC Division III Championships to be held in the Armory in New York City on Saturday March 2nd at 1:30pm. The Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference represents 186 division III schools and is the highest level championship short of the NCAA championships (which requires an 18’4″ jump for provisional qualification).

Her jumping today also moved her to the top of the Ithaca College long jump depth chart and ranks her #2 in the Empire 8 league and 13th of the 19 athletes qualified for the ECAC (#2 freshman). #19 is Michele Kaufmann, Kayla’s captain as a freshman at North. If KP were still in high school, she would rank #1 in the state at the moment.
